An NHS Health Scotland report quoting figures from 2015-16, found that children starting school in danger of becoming obese was 7% in the most affluent areas (middle class) but nearly double that at 13% in poorer neighbourhoods (working class). “Researchers found the most affluent areas saw the lowest levels of obesity. Obesity among women becomes progressively more common as the level of deprevation increases.” The more I look, the more I see. I see people like me, of my age and younger, carrying far too much weight. I lost 3 stone just under 20 kg in a year by going to the gym a couple of times a week and cutting out most sugar. Reactions where mixed, some folk would say, you look great, then you have the, dont lose too much, concerns (often from skinny people?). What surprised me the most was the amount of people who said that they didnt think that I “looked that big!” Before I lost the weight. Which takes us to the heart of the matter. As our calorie consumption has increased and our physically active lifestyles decreased, we have become used to seeing the bigger bodies that we now inhabit. Super size me is now the norm. I’ve never really got the term “comfort food”. I grew up eating potatoes ( usually chips) meat and beans. I had no idea that chips where supposed to bring me comfort ? It was just my dinner. Before I get started I would like to kick off with a disclaimer! For anyone who thinks they can use my words to promote a racist or sexist agenda, think again. Thankfully we have moved on considerably as a society, backward language and attitudes, are in general, less common. There is though an unfortunate down side to this change for the better. It’s the demonisation of the working class in general and the white working class male in particular. As race and gender become taboos, not to be mocked or slighted, the lazy so-called media on this island have set their sights on the white man. So too have the so called left, which has Infact been squatted by middle class social missionaries since asfar back as the late 70’s. . . Since the decimation of tradional white working class industry, followed by large scale unemployment, then mopped up by Tony Blairs land of low pay, subsidised by tax credits, we have found ourselves in a state of crisis. An absolute crisis of identity, our sense of self undermined , our dialects mocked, our dress sense scrutinised. We are slated as being chavs, neds, beyond redemption. While cuing up to knock us down, the very same people are waiting on the sidelines, hoping to capitalise on our anger, our disenfranchisement, 50 shades of fascists, from UKIP to the clowns of BRITAIN FIRST, the people who hate the proud history of the Brittish working class, a history, like it or not […]
Work life balance, can we get it right? Or are we asking the wrong questions? Maybe instead of thinking about what to do after work, what to do at the weekend, what to do when we retire. . . we could be stealing a wee slice of life during the day? If I’m not standing on my head in the middle of a building site, I’m trying to have a laugh and hopefully give a few others a laugh too, even if it is at my expense. It’s far too easy to assume the worst or take a negative outlook. Misery loves company. Standing waiting for the lift to come and moaning about how slow it is? Race your mate up the stairs! Get yourself off the job at the breaks, not just physically but mentally. It‘s your life, don’t sell yourself out, steal as much of your life back as you can. . . . Go get some!
I set up my very first class in April 2015 as a men only class. I’ve seen the change in men’s attitudes over the last ten to fifteen years. From “NO CHANCE!” to “AYE, IVE HEARD ITS GOOD FOR YOU!” Funny thing is that yoga was actually created for men in ancient India and dance was for women. As yoga moved west it was taken up mostly by middle class women. With everyone from Andy Murray to professional football and rugby players now regularly practicing yoga, it is firmly back on the agenda for men. Women tend to find many outlets in life. Whether it’s through organised classes or events or tapping into their friends. We men often find it harder to take care of our emotional and physical well being. Let’s face it everybody at some point gets tired, stressed and fatigued. A men only class allows guys the ability to practice without the awkwardness of being the only man in the class, which I’m quite well aware of myself. In fact, at magpie yoga we have so successfully integrated men into regular mixed classes, that the need for men only classes has actually fallen away. Having said that if any new starts feel more comfortable with men only starter classes I do put on 4 week blocks when demand requires. Men only starter block classes can open the door for men to join regular mixed classes which previously may have been unthinkable. . . . Have a go guys. […]
